WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY

Background

The concept of establishing a Women University of Ghana was hatched jointly in 1997 by Mamaga Miedoafe the second, Paramount Queen Mother of Anlo Traditional Area in the Keta District of the Volta Region, and an African-American Lady, Mrs. Vicky Milhomme, during the latter's installation as Queen Mother by Anlo-Afiadenyigba Ladies Development Association under the stool name Mama Mawusi the First.

After her departure back home,  a Technical Committee, under the chairmanship of Togbi Kporku the third, Chief of Alakple and former Ghana's Ambassador to Japan, was formed to study the idea and advise accordingly.  The committee commissioned a pre-feasibility study of the project after its own preliminary research.

On her return, Vicky Milhomme established Mama Mawusi Foundation for the promotion of Women University of Ghana Project in the U.S.A.

The Committee is now chaired by Mrs. Matilda Fiadzigbey who is the Administrator of Stool Lands in Ghana.

Vision

The Women University of Ghana Project is to have Ghanaian women in formal education, who having attained their full potentials, are fully empowered to play their roles much more efficiently in all aspects of national growth and development, and in particular, in hastening the country's vision of attaining middle income status in the near future.

Mission

To provide an appropriate environment or centre of excellence in which women are motivated and challenged to reach their full potentials in formal education as top flight graduates in Business and Management, Social Sciences, Agriculture, Fisheries, Science and Technology, Information And Communication Technology ( ICT).

Objectives

1. To repair the gender imbalance in access to quality tertiary education in Ghana.

2. To provide a Centre of Excellence in tertiary education primarily, but not exclusively for women.

3. To contribute meaningfully to the education and training of qualified woman and manpower for the country's development

4. To tackle problems faced by women most especially in the area of poverty, and to enhance the full emancipation of women.

The University

The proposed Women University Of Ghana will be unique by its devotion to the study of development and change.  It will emphasize disciplines which are of particular interest to women and on areas which are development -oriented.

The institution shall train top-flight graduates in the target subject areas so as to produce graduates with appropriate entrepreneurial skills most of whom should be able to establish their own businesses.

The institution will undertake research into issues relating to the development and socio-cultural needs of women in particular and the country as a whole.

It will operate a vigorous outreach programme to disseminate the results of such researches in order to bridge the gap between "town and gown".

The University will become a centre of excellence in gender studies both in teaching and research, as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

An International Centre for Women's Studies would be established which would also serve as a focus for workshops, seminars, conferences and research in relevant subject areas.

The proposed University would be administered by a Governing Council constituted by representations from academia, the professions and business.

There will be a Chief Executive who will assume overall control for the day-to-day administration of the University.

Acquisition Of Project Site

To enable the project to take off as early as possible, a temporary campus has been acquired at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation camp at Anloga.  A right of entry to the project site has been granted to the WUGP, while steps are being taken to formalise the agreement by lease.

Meanwhile, suitable sites for a permanent campus development, are being sought most especially in parts of the Keta District that are easily accessible to visitors.

Interim Accreditation

The National Accreditation Board (NAB) of Ghana has granted interim authority to the WUGP in January 2000, to commence preparation for the establishment of the institution to be known initially as Women University College of Ghana.  With this authority, the WUGP is to :-
