ATTRACTIONS :: Greater Accra

Greater Accra Region is the smallest, yet the most densely populated region in Ghana. It has Accra as the gateway and capital city of the entire country. The region has a number of spectacular tourist attractions. The main ones include the following:-

Kwame Nkrumah-Mausoleum
There is a life size statue of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana. The statute is positioned at the exact spot he stood to declare the independence of Ghana on the night of March 6, 1957. There is a huge mausoleum housing the mortal remains of the “African of the First Millennium”. Visitors pay an entrance fee to be conducted round the garden and to visit a special museum where items used by the late Pan-Africanist extra-ordinaire are on display.

The National Museum
The National Museum, the biggest of its kind in Ghana, is located on Barnes Road not far from Accra Workers College. The museum houses a fascinating collection of a wide range of Ghana’s archaeological and historical treasures. The museum also has on display art objects from other countries in the West African Sub-Region. It is open to the public all week long. Entrance fee is normally charged.

Independence Square
Formerly known as the Black Star Square, this square, located at the Beach front of the Ministries Area, is the most important venue for several national and international celebrations. It has a prominent landmark - the Independence Arch to commemorate Ghana’s Independence from Gt. Britain in 1957 and a memorial to the Unknown Soldier. This Square is open to the general public throughout the week.

Accra International Conference Centre
This 1,600 seater plenary hall is the most important and the biggest conference centre of its kind in Ghana. Several national and international conferences are held here.

The National Theatre
This unique architectural masterpiece of extra-ordinary scenic beauty encompasses national centre for performing arts. It is usually busy on week-ends where “concert parties” perform to entertain people of all walks of life.

Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Affairs
This centre of excellence was devoted to the late Dr. W.B. Du Bois, a noted Pan-Africanist who was invited by the first Ghanaian President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to help develop the “Encyclopaedia Africana Project”. Dr. Du Bois stayed and died in the very house and his body was re-buried a few years ago at Cantonments, not far from El-Wak Stadium. The centre has become the place for all Africans and Blacks in the Diaspora to visit on pilgrimage. The centre of excellence houses a wide range of books, manuscripts and other scholarly works of the late eminent Doctor. The centre is normally opened throughout the week.

George Padmore Research Library
Located very near the Ridge Circle is a small yet well stocked research library devoted mainly to African-American Studies. It was named after George Padmore a prominent Pan-Africanist.

The Castle Osu
Formerly known as Christiansborg, this Castle built in 1659, has become the seat of government since the 1920s. It is also the official residence of the President of Ghana. It is not normally open to the general public. Visits must be pre-arranged with the State Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Accra Zoo
The Accra Zoo located behind the Flagstaff House used to be the private Zoo of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana. It now has a wide range of collections from all the three ecosystems of Ghana; the forest zone, the savannah zone and semi-deciduous forest zone as far as flora and fauna are concerned.

Centre for National Culture
Formerly known as the Arts Centre, this place is the heart beat of Ghana’s arts and crafts. Several shops place on display for sale works of art and culture. This unique market has a wide range of artefacts as well as souvenirs. The Centre is opened throughout the year. For those in search of authentic Ghanaian works of art and culture, be it Kente fabrics, Adinkra, carvings et cetera, the best place to be is the Centre for National Culture only a few steps from the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

University of Ghana, Legon
University of Ghana, located on Legon Hills was set up in 1948. It is one of the best Universities in the Tropical World. The University has beautiful gardens and several departments. University of Ghana also has an impressive library known as the Balme Library. The Department of Linguistics has its library named after Prof. Abena Dolphyne in recognition of the role she played as the first Ghanaian female professor and pro-vice chancellor of the University of Ghana. The library is well stocked with a number of publications on Linguistics.

Krokobite Beach Resort
Located in a rural setting 25 km West of Accra and a few metres from the Atlantic Ocean is Ghana’s premier Beach Resort of its kind - Kokrobite Beach Resort. The Resort is also the home of the Academy of African Music and Arts (AAMA). The AAMA is the place to go for free concerts on weekends or to learn a few funky drum rhythms. The Academy runs classes both for groups and individuals on request. It also has a good sea-food restaurant and a hotel

Makola Market
Accra is often regarded by the foreign visitor as a city of several markets. There are indeed several market stalls in Accra and of course the most popular is the Makola Market. Several articles of trade are put on display at Makola from the most basic to the most sophisticated. At Makola, one needs to bargain - a tradition that dates back to the beginning of history.

Shai Hills Resource Reserve
Shai Hills Resource Reserve lies north-east of Accra. It has a number of animals including Baboons, Monkeys, Snakes, Bush Bucks and several types of Birds. The reserve is opened throughout the week. There are some interesting caves and archaeological sites in the reserve. Nominal fees are paid for conducted tours.

Ada
Ada is located some 120 km east of Accra. It is an area of extra-ordinary scenic beauty. The Volta River enters the sea at Azizanya. The coconut cladded sandy beach drenched in brilliant sunshine of Azizanya is the home of several sea turtles - Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Green Turtle. The area is also popular for its Ramsa site where several bird species roost, breed, feed and rest on their journey from the south to the North Polar Regions. The estuary and the sea with the adjoining Angaw Lagoon have several species of fishes ranging from the brackish water tilapia in the lagoon and estuaries to tarpons in the estuary proper and thence to loud-mouthed bass, barracuda, several shark species to crustaceans as crabs, squids, clams and others such as as bottle-nosed whales, et cetera.

Aburi Botanical Gardens
The Aburi Botanical Gardens are perched on a ridge 32km ( 20 miles) north of Accra. They provide a welcome getaway from the bustle of Accra. The gardens are well-maintained and full of a variety of exotic plant life from around the world. The oldest tree in the garden is an approximately 150-year old kapok facing the park's beautiful headquarters building.. It is the only one that was not cut down when the British were planting the gardens which was opened in 1890.
